Japanese Phrases


This is by no means a complete list but it is a start. These are some of the most frequently used words or phrases used in anime/manga.

Neko - Cat
Jahneh - "see you later". used among friends
Arigatou - Thank You
Arigatou gozaimusu - Thank you very much
Domo - Means "Thank you". Can also mean "Hi" and "Goodbye". Useful word to remember
Sensei - Teacher, Doctor
Senpai - Respected elder
Nee-sama = Sister
Nii-sama = Brother
Onee-chan = older sister
Onii-chan = Older brother
Mushi mushi - Greeting over the telephone
Daijoubu? - Are you alright? (formal)
Ogenki deska? = Polite way of asking "How are you?"
Genki desu = I'm fine thanks
Honto - means "Really?"
Baka - Stupid, idiot, fool etc.
Kawaii - Cute
Nanda - "What is it?"
Nani?? - What? (surpise)
Urasai - Shut Up (pronounced "Your-ah-sigh")
Gomen or gomenasai - I'm sorry
Ore - reference to oneself "I"
Watashi - the more common use of "I" (normally used more by girls)
Chotto - "Just a moment" pronounced "cho-toe"
Chotto Matte - "Wait a second!"
ke-ki = Cake, pronounced with the pause in the middle
Kawaii - means "cute" :3
Dame - "Stop!" or "No!", a very firm way to say no (pronouneced "Duh-meh")
Iie - "no" (pronounced "Eee-eh")
Hai - "yes" (pronounced "Hi")
Sugoi - Amazing
ne? = Right?
Sumimasen = Excuse me, Please forgive me
Ike = means "Go"
yokai = means "Roger, Understood".
Suki - Love, (pronounced ski) the "u" is silent like in desu (pronounced des)
Daisuki desu - I really love/like you
Oishi desu - "it's delicious"
hajimemashite - Pleased to meet you
Yoroshiku - Not so polite way of saying "Please to meet you".
Dozo - a form of "please" (suggesting "go ahead")
shoujo - Manga for girls
shounen - Manga for guys
Zen Zen - means "totally" (slang)

Colours in Japanese

white - shiro (she-row)
black - kuro (coo-row)
brown - chairo (the 'ai' rhymes with the 'y' in 'try')
blue - ao (ah-oh)
red - aka (ah-kah)
yellow - kiro (key-row)
pink - pinku (peen-coo)
green - midori (me-door-ree)
purple - murasaki (moo-rah-sah-key)
orange - orenji (oh-ren-jee)
colour - iro (ee-row)
for example

ano tokei wa shiroi = that clock is white
kono enpitsu wa aoi = this pencil is blue
kanojo no kami ga akai = the girl's hair is red


for others:

midori na ki desu - its a green tree (fear my lack of creativity)
pinku no akachan desu - pink baby, the baby is pink
orenji na... orenji desu - its an orange orange (XDD)
mirasaki no kami desu - purple hair
